UNA Cheltenham

EVENTS ARCHIVE:

Autun 2007:
Cheltenham UNA Branch held two events in the autumn. The AGM was held on October 11th, with David Waldrop (UNA HQ) was the keynote speaker. Martin Horwood MP and the Mayor, John Rawson (both UNA members) also addressed the group, with some very useful facts and anecdotes relating to the UN and to climate change. On Saturday, November 17th, David Kerr-Rettie spoke to members on the structure of the UN.
Spring 2007:
In January, Leo Guttridge gave an illustrated talk of his goodwill visit to Kenya, which included slides of Elsamere, the conservation project set up by Joy Adamson. Martin Horwood, MP, followed with an interesting account of his life in parliament. In March, James Sindle, political officer at the USA Embassy, spoke on American foreign policy in relation to the United Nations. This event was particularly well attended and predictably it provoked some controversial questions and comments. Michael Davis (consultant to the Food and Agricultural Organisation) completed the season by giving an excellent and extremely well-informed talk on "The UN specialised agencies in an era of change". In April, five members from the Cheltenham branch attended the UNA national annual conference, held this year at Warwick University. Sue Thompson wrote a brief summary of this conference and this is available on request. (see contacts page).

July 2006 Summer Fundraiser: Many thanks to all those that attended/helped/bought/donated at this year's Fundraiser at the Exmouth Arms. Here are a few pictures:

AGM 2005 / October Meeting: In the 60th year of the United Nations, Cheltenham UNA enjoyed a particularly interesting autumn programme. Dame Margaret Anstee was the guest speaker at the AGM in September when she spoke of her extensive work for the UN covering several decades. Dame Margaret continues to work for the UN throughout her retirement; in fact she was very well attended by members and visitors, an the evening included some excellent refreshments and a delicious 60th Anniversary cake. Alex Hawkins took over as President of Cheltenham UNA and Derek Thomspson retired after 19 years in the office.
